Continuing the series on clearing up Law of Attraction misconceptions…

Misconception # 3 – Law of Attraction is against my religion; you shouldn’t believe in Law of Attraction if you believe in God.

This is an interesting one.  It is always my position that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs.  Some people believe that Law of Attraction goes against their religious doctrine.  If this is the way that they feel, it is indeed true FOR THEM.  However, that doesn’t make it an undeniable truth.  Law of Attraction describes the way the Universe responds to your thoughts and it will continue to work in that way even if you don’t believe it.  Law of Attraction does not take anything away from God.  In fact, you can refer to Law of Attraction as God.  You can refer to the Universe as God.  No matter what words you use to describe the greatness of our world, it continues to function the same.

I have noticed that Law of Attraction principles are explained in many religious teachings.  There are quite a few similarities, so I’ll name a few.

Law of Attraction Bible1)      The story of Joseph in the Christian Bible describes a child who had a dream of becoming king.  Although he was the least likely person to become king and his family didn’t believe in him, he held onto the thought and it manifested.

2)      The Bible emphasizes the importance of faith (or belief).  Law of Attraction says that the Universe responds to your thoughts, particularly your dominant thoughts and beliefs.

3)      As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7.

4)      For Buddhists, the first lines of the Dhammapada are “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.”

Although I can’t see any reason why a religious person should reject Law of Attraction, I believe that we should all follow our inner guidance.  If something feels wrong to you—don’t do it.  But why might Christians or other religious people reject Law of Attraction?  I believe that the cause for concern is that people often want to believe that their way is the only way.  This is especially true of Western religions which blatantly teach that eternal damnation awaits all who choose a different path.  In such cases, people may be discontent with the idea that those who don’t subscribe to their beliefs are living more joyful lives.

For many people, there is comfort in the belief that there is only one answer and that they have it.  They may need to disprove anything contrary to their personal belief in order to continue feeling righteous.  This, in my opinion, will resolve itself as they grow spiritually.  As we become deeply spiritual (not religious), we no longer seek uniformity.  We cease to need others to do what we think is right.  We learn to tune into Inner guidance, thus we no longer need justification or support for our own beliefs.

When it comes to Eastern religions, the disconnect with Law of Attraction is related to the way Law of Attraction is promoted more than with the Universal law itself.  Oftentimes, Law of Attraction is presented to people as a tool for getting what you want.  Whereas religious methodologies like Buddhism teach people to alleviate the wanting.  Because Law of Attraction works best for us when we rid ourselves of obsessive, resistant thoughts, there is a strong parallel here.

Both the approach to Law of Attraction and the approach to religion are evidence of human tendency to take everything to the extreme.  We don’t need to make Law of Attraction deliver our desires.  We simply need to allow it.  We don’t need to completely give up all of our desires.  We simply need to relax about them.  We don’t need to force everyone to believe in our religion.  We simply need to be content with our own beliefs.  The Universe laws are omnipresent and they are affecting every single one of us in a different way.

I am not quiet familiar with Law of Attraction. But as far as I know, many things that were said in Law of Attraction came from the Bible, or at least conform to the teaching of the Bible. So, it’s not necessary to debate it.
