Joseph Campbell (1904-1987)

Joseph Campbell is remembered as a powerful teacher of the human spirit and mythology, public speaker, and award-winning author.  His greatest and most well-known works include the books The Hero with a Thousand Faces, The Power of Myth, Pathways to Bliss, and Myths to Live By. Campbell’s  teachings resonated with the world far more than he could have imagined.

Some of Joseph’s Campbell’s inspirational sayings and quotations are:

  • Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.
  • I think the person who takes a job in order to live – that is to say, for the money – has turned himself into a slave.
  • Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.
  • Life is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it. The meaning of life is whatever you ascribe it to be. Being alive is the meaning.
  • We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.
  • We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it is all about.
  • When everything is lost, and all seems darkness, then comes the new life and all that is needed.
  • The way to find out about happiness is to keep your mind on those moments when you feel most happy, when you are really happy — not excited, not just thrilled, but deeply happy. This requires a little bit of self-analysis. What is it that makes you happy? Stay with it, no matter what people tell you. This is what is called following your bliss
  • It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.
  • But if a person has had the sense of the Call — the feeling that there’s an adventure for him — and if he doesn’t follow that, but remains in the society because it’s safe and secure, then life dries up. And then he comes to that condition in late middle age: he’s gotten to the top of the ladder, and found that it’s against the wrong wall.  If you have the guts to follow the risk, however, life opens, opens, opens up all along the line.
  • Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.
  • When we simply turn outward, we see all of these little problems here and there. But, if we look inward, we see that we are the source of them all.
  • If you follow your bliss, doors will open for you that wouldn’t have opened for anyone else.
