Universal Law of Attraction Myths: Truth v.s. Hype

in Law of Attraction

universal-law-of-attractionIf you have any connection to the outside world, you’ve heard of the Universal Law of Attraction. Bookstores, web sites, and self improvement seminars are overflowing with information about it.  Nonetheless, there are still so many misconceptions about how our thoughts create (or attract) our reality.

Whether you’re a walking, talking Law of Attraction success story or someone who’s been disappointed by exaggerated claims and Law of Attraction myths, I hope you’ll find value in taking a deeper look at the misunderstandings that lead many to believe this Universal law is nothing more than a gimmick.

Law of Attraction Myth 1: If you think about something long enough, it will definitely happen

This myth is an exaggeration, though not a total lie.  If I sit here and focus on skittles falling from the sky, there’s very little chance that we’ll experience skittle rain.  However, something of a similar thought vibration will manifest.

I may suddenly start to become aware of skittles everywhere—on the concrete where children have dropped them, in a co-worker’s cubicle, on the counter at the grocery store.  Alternatively, I may not see skittles at all.  I may start to experience events that give me the same feeling that I get when focusing on skittles raining from the sky—joy, amazement, child-like excitement.

Law of Attraction Myth2: Everything you think about will manifest without any work on your part

The Universal Law of Attraction is constantly at work in our lives, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do anything other than think.

When you are thinking about a desire and focused upon the joyful feeling of manifestation, you’re in perfect alignment with what you want.  However, this desire may manifest in different forms.

You may attract wonderful ideas on what ACTION needs to be taken in order to bring you closer to the goal.  You may attract people that will assist you and circumstances that are favorable to your success.  You may find yourself in the right places at the right time.  This is all wonderful, but notice that it doesn’t mean you just lean back in a recliner and watch life happen to you as you imagine it.  What fun would that be anyway?

Law of Attraction Myth 3: Law of Attraction is an easy way to get rich

Although you can definitely manifest money and attract riches into your life, it’s misleading to tout Law of Attraction as some type of tool that you use to make this easy.  What we attract into our lives is based on our dominant thoughts and beliefs—and most people wouldn’t say it’s easy to change those.

Let’s say you spent your entire life believing that it is difficult to generate riches or acquire great wealth.  Maybe you developed your beliefs about abundance by hearing your parents repeatedly say things like, “Money doesn’t grow on trees” or “some people just have all the luck.”  Over the years, you made those thoughts your own and you held onto them until they became powerful beliefs that created matching circumstances in your life.

Considering that you’ve put a great deal of thought and energy into creating these beliefs, do you really believe you will release them within an instant?  Will a few positive thoughts about wealth change what you’ve believed for decades?

Law of Attraction will not revise your beliefs about money. That is your work. But this Universal law does make it possible for you to attract abundance once your beliefs are in alignment with it.

If manifesting money is your dream, don’t be discouraged when it doesn’t happen immediately.  Appreciate what you CAN do immediately.  In this moment, you can begin softening your outlook on finances, thus allowing money to flow into your experience in accordance with the development of your newly held beliefs.

I’ll publish part 2 of this series on Law of Attraction myths on Thursday.  Meanwhile, I look forward to learning about your experiences with applying Law of Attraction principles.

Have you experienced success or disappointment in attracting your desires? What are your feelings in general about the Universal Law of Attraction? Have you been discouraged by myths or exaggerations of this Universal law?

Hi there, I really enjoyed reading this post. The Law of Attraction is a wonderful thing if you know how to use it for you, instead of against you. One of the keys I found was ‘What you Resist Persists’. So when we realise what it is we are creating. We can eliminate that so it does not come back to annoy or irritate us. :) great post. I look forward to more :)

Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard. I love that quote… what you resist persists. Law of Attraction may not be the easiest thing to understand, but the sky is the limit once you get it.

Thanks for the article. I went through a couple of law of attraction books that I got through a garage sale the other week and I wasn’t at all too convinced about it. reading your article made me realize the possiblities of this law can work for my benefit. Thank you!

Oh yes Cowvin, it can be wonderful once you separate the truth from the hype.

Hello,

What a great post. I think people are too quick to dismiss the law of attraction because it hasn’t necessarily worked for them. I believe it will help you on your way to what you desire, but as you say, action must be taken. It is no good constantly thinking of being a size 8 while sitting down with a pizza and chocolate bar!
I think it focuses our attention on what we want so we naturally carry out actions which take us nearer to that goal.
In The Science of Getting Rich, Whattles says that our thoughts will cause the things we desire to be manifested, but our action enables us to recieve them. I like this way of looking at it – all our goals are ready for us to take, we simply need to take action and they will be given to us!
Best wishes,
Kate

Hi Nea, there is a saying that fits nicely here. The reason most people don’t recognize opportunity is because it often comes disguised as hard work. The law of attraction is a good mindset, but if it isn’t followed up with action, then it’s just wishful thinking.

Nea, I have to confess to being a big believer in the whole self-improvement genre but a big non-believer in the Law of Attraction. It’s merely a well known pyschological process re-packaged and marketed for the mass consumer market. Whether it’s the LOA or Cosmic Ordering or Creative Visualisation or Dream Boards they are one and the same thing. More to the point though is it’s so very refreshing to read someone who believes in it flagging up the myths and hypes to help others re-focus their understanding and efforts. I applaude you for this.

Thanks so much for your comment John. I suppose there will always be an industry trying to gain financial benefit by guaranteeing a quick fix to life’s issues. That quick fix may go by many names and create a lot of false hope. Usually, if we look a little deeper, there is some degree of truth. It may not be as glamorous as the hyped up fantasy version, but it’s often worth discovering nonetheless.

This is a great article. I got interested in the Law of Attraction a number of years ago and since then have tried to incorporate it in my every day life.

I have had my successes and I have had my failures, but at least now I am able to analyse my failures and see where I went wrong.

The Law of Attraction is something that should be taught in schools in my own opinion.

Hi Nigel. I’m glad you enjoyed this post. I, too, love looking back even at my failures to see where I went wrong. It’s much more empowering for me than blaming and shucking responsibility.
