thich nhat hanhThich Nhat Hanh is undeniably one of the world’s greatest spiritual teachers.  Born in Vietnam in 1926, this Buddhist Monk has spread his message of love, compassion, and peace to people all over the world.

This is a short collection of my favorite Buddhist quotes from the writings, speeches, and poems of Thich Nhat Hanh. I hope you’ll find something here that further opens your eyes and heart.

quotes“When another person makes you suffer, it is because he suffers deeply within himself, and his suffering is spilling over. He does not need punishment; he needs help. That’s the message he is sending.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

“If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

“Waking up this morning, I smile. Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I vow to live fully in each moment and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh [Read more quotes]

If I see one more commercial for the greatest diet pill or exercise equipment, I think I’ll scream.  I mean, we all want to look and feel our best; but I know overkill when I see it.

In order to lose weight or get in shape, do we really need fat burners, appetite suppressants, machines, diet food, electrical muscle stimulators, surgery, pills, sweat suits and all the other recommended “body fixers?”   Heck no!

As a part of my self improvement journey, I want to look and feel better than I have in years.  However, I believe in keeping it simple.  Whether you want to lose weight, get stronger, improve your health, or just maintain your current body, you can do it without all the gimmicks.

Here are a few weight loss and fitness tips to help you replace destructive weight management information, so you can reach your healthy living goals the simple way.

1. Avoid overtraining. If you’ve ever awakened to extreme pain after a new workout, you may already understand how damaging overtraining can be.  Even if a trainer or friend encourages you to go far beyond what your body is accustomed to, it’s best to avoid that strategy.  Yes, it could possibly result in “Biggest Loser” type effects.  But it’s more likely to lead to injury and/or abandonment of the exercise program.

2. Rethink spot training. Direct ab exercises are extremely popular.  But do they work?  It depends.  [Read the full blog article →]

“Appreciation of life itself, becoming suddenly aware of the miracle of being alive, on this planet, can turn what we call ordinary life into a miracle. ” -Dan Wakefield

How often do you find yourself wanting more?  If we’re 100% honest, most of us pretty much always want something.  And there’s nothing wrong with that.

We are born into our physical bodies with a natural desire to fully experience life. Along with that comes a tendency to crave new things, opportunities, and circumstances.  Don’t be ashamed of this.  It is what drives, inspires and motivates us.  It is simple human nature.  However, in our quest for more of this and more of that, it is important to appreciate what we already have.

Unfortunately, for most of us, it is the things most dear to us that we take for granted.  Because they seem so firmly within our grasp, it is almost as if they become invisible.  Instead of showing gratitude and appreciation for life’s treasures, we often spend an excessive amount of time obsessing over what we don’t have.  Well, guess who loses out when you fail to have an attitude of gratitude.  You guessed it! “You’re the best mother in the whole world!”  That’s not exactly a typical statement coming from a teenager to their parent.  Hearing those words from my 17 year old daughter’s mouth made me feel like the richest parent on the planet.

She has been the center of my world, my primary source of motivation, since the moment she was born.  Realizing the challenges ahead of me as a young mother, I always approached parenting as both my greatest responsibility and my greatest joy.  Nonetheless, it’s been the most difficult of difficult jobs.

The Evolving Role of a Parent

Newsflash: Parenting does not become an easy job as kids become grown-ups. This is something I’m just starting to truly understand.

Because the role of a parent is constantly changing, parenting adult children may be just as challenging as parenting small kids and adolescents. It gets increasingly difficult to decide how to be the best possible parent at each stage.

I dare not trivialize parenting by implying that it can be an easy job if you follow some step-by-step guide. That would be a bold faced lie. However, most people truly do want to be good parents.

We want good relationships with our kids and adult children.  We want to see them enjoy their childhood, make wise decisions, and grow up to have amazing lives as adults.  Yep, that’s what parents want; but getting there is another story. [Read the full blog article →]

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” ~J.K. Rowling

Who are you? What are you made of? What defines you? Is it what you have or don’t have (money, diamonds, fancy cars, a great career)? Is it who you know or don’t know (professionals, elitists, politicians, laborers, beggars)? Is it where you live (suburbs, farm, inner city, homeless shelter)? Maybe you think it’s your job title, physical appearance, or the family you come from that defines who and what you are. Such thinking is flawed and may only serve as to create self imposed limits.

May today’s inspirational words inspire you to a grander vision of yourself.

You are not you because of what you have, where you live, or who you know. In fact, you are you in spite of these things. The biggest reflection of who you are is visible through the choices that you make. And you make them in accordance with who you are.

For every life circumstance that’s outside of your control, there are choices within it that are yours and yours alone. You may not get to choose the cards you’re dealt, but you do get to choose how to play them. So, remember the importance of making choices that are in alignment with your best self. selfimprovementideasFun, challenging, rewarding, exhilarating, joyful, satisfying. Are these the words that describe your life? I sure hope they do. In fact, I wish these words were the description of everyone’s life. To the contrary, millions of people continuously seek self improvement information to help them cope with a life that doesn’t measure up to their dreams.

This list of 25 self improvement ideas is not meant to be an all encompassing life fixer-upper, but it is a powerful starting place. No matter how great (or not so great) your life may be, applying some of these life changing self improvement ideas will help to make your days a little brighter.

1. Practice patience with yourself and others. Instead of rushing through life, pause to fully experience the journey.

2. Try to understand others instead of judging them. Look closely at your perception of others for opportunities to be more loving, tolerant, compassionate, and open minded.

3. Listen more than you talk. Listening skills are the core of all knowledge, personal growth, self development, and success. You’ll be amazed by what you learn when you close your mouth and listen intently to those around you. In all that you do, open your ears and heart.

4. Surround yourself with positive, motivated people. It’s easier to accomplish self improvement goals when your inner circle is filled with those who share your ambitions.

5. Reduce or eliminate communication with toxic people. Allowing growth often means letting go of those things (and people) that do not serve you. Detachment from sources of negativity is not always easy, but it’s a big step towards self improvement success. [Read more self improvement ideas]

“Live life fully while you’re here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You’re going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don’t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.”   Anthony Robbins

taking chances picTaking chances may be frowned upon by those who like to play it safe, but it is within this realm of risk-taking that we live life to the fullest.  Of course, taking chances may mean that we sometimes make a fool of ourselves.  We may even get frustrated, embarrassed or hurt.  But what about the big picture?

It is only through taking chances that we make new discoveries about ourselves, others, and the world we live in.  By living fearlessly and risking the safety of our comfort zone, we gain opportunities to live our best life.  Taking chances leads both to unforgettable mistakes and indescribable joy, thus we must be willing to experience both.
