I’m not a huge fan of most doctors, but I absolutely love the Doctor Oz show. Whereas most doctors offer one prescription after another, Doctor Oz is more focused on natural remedies and preventative measures. No medication or surgery compares to the body’s ability to protect and heal itself naturally.
On the Doctor Oz show, natural remedies and prevention are discussed for everything from skin care, the common cold and weight loss to sexual problems, aging and cancer prevention. I hope you enjoy the 10 natural health ideas below.
10 Natural Remedies from the Doctor Oz Show
1. Dilute juice and delete pounds. A quick way to cut calories, reduce your sugar intake and lose a little weight is to dilute fruit juices with water. An 8 oz. glass of orange juice is more than 110 calories, 21g sugar, and 26g of carbohydrates. By drinking 5 oz. of orange juice diluted with 3 oz. of water, you’ll get the same great taste while greatly reducing the sugars and calories.
2. Nutmeg to the rescue. If you’re having trouble sleeping, a little nutmeg in a glass of milk may help you drift into la-la land. Nutmeg is also a great solution for a diminishing libido or an upset stomach. It takes less than one teaspoon of this wonderful spice to get the benefits. More than 1 tablespoon or 2 may cause nausea, so don’t overdo it.
3. The sugar connection to high blood pressure and cholesterol. If you’re suffering from high cholesterol or hypertension despite a low fat, low-salt diet, try giving up your sweet tooth. Added sugar is converted to triglycerides (fat), thus leading to lower good cholesterol (HDL), higher bad cholesterol(LDL), high blood pressure and heart disease.
4. Milk for garlic breath. Love garlic, but hate garlic breath? Milk may save the day. Because our digestive systems can’t break down the AMS compound in garlic, it oozes out when we breathe and sweat. Toothpaste and mouthwash offer very little help; however, whole milk dramatically reduces the concentration of AMS and the infamous smell of garlic breath.
5. Just say no to peroxide. Most of us have been applying hydrogen peroxide to wounds since childhood, but Dr. Oz says this isn’t a good idea. Reason number one is that healthy cells surrounding the abrasion may be harmed. Secondly, the body releases a compound that neutralizes hydrogen peroxide before it can complete its job. A better solution is to wash your wounds and apply antibiotic ointment.
6. Refrigerate canned foods. If you eat soup or other foods from a can, try putting them in the refrigerator overnight before eating them. The fat will solidify on the surface, thus allowing you to take it out and toss it in the trash before it trashes your body. This is a wonderful to lose weight and/or reduce your fat intake, particularly if you eat a lot of canned foods.
7. Pumpkin smooth skin. A $2.00 solution for dry, blotchy skin can be found in any dollar store. The $1.00 exfoliation mits and a $1.00 can of plain pumpkin. The canned pumpkin contains alpha hydroxyl acid, which is the main ingredient in many $100.00 skin repair products. Massage the pumpkin in with the exfoliation mit, let it sit for a few minutes, and enjoy your revitalized skin.
8. Take stinky feet to the liquor cabinet. When foot powders and bathing are simply not enough to destroy foot odor, your liquor cabinet holds the ultimate solution. Even the smelliest feet imaginable are no match for a vodka bath. Just add vodka to a small bin of water and soak your feet in the mixture for 15 minutes.
9. Eat an apple 15 minutes before meal. The fiber in an apple occupies enough space in your stomach to keep you from overeating at the dinner table. If you can normally eat a whole 8 oz. steak before feeling full, the apple may help you to get that same feeling after eating only 5 ounces.
10. Bite your pencil. A quick, medication-free solution to tension headaches is a pencil between the teeth. The pencil will allow you to rest your jaw instead of clenching, thus relieving the tension and pain.
The Doctor Oz Show has quickly become a favorite of mine. Aside from being totally hot, Doctor Oz steps outside of the mainstream medical community to offer natural health information. Even for someone like me who already knows a ton of natural remedies, the Doctor Oz show is a lifesaver. As you see from the list above, improving your body, and your health as a whole, doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
There are alternative health remedies for pretty much anything you can imagine. Some of these natural remedies may be more involved and costly than others, but simplicity isn’t the sole purpose here. The purpose is to recognize that the recommendation of a doctor, pharmacist, nutritionist or (even) parent is not the end of the road. You have more options than you could ever imagine.
Remember the old saying, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” Well, there’s definitely more than one way to take care of yourself.
It’s comment time. Are there any natural remedies that you use religiously? What about any remedies your parents used that you’ve turned away from.

This was a really great share Nea! We often cook with a crock pot and once the food is refrigerated we can skim the solid fat off the surface. Never thought to do that with canned food… it’s brilliant!
Yes, Chris, that’s a great tip that I wouldn’t have thought of myself.
Lots of interesting tips! Never knew that about peroxide. I also like the idea of eating an apple before a meal. I have also heard that its good to drink water 30 minutes before a meal because we could confuse hunger with thirst. Thanks for the article!
The peroxide tip caught me by complete surprise. I’ve been using peroxide on small wounds since I was a little child. My grandmother loved pulling out that brown bottle.
Hi Nea, I’m a huge fan of more natural remedies. While one can go to far with alternative treatments, I’ve been in the position of being prescribed pill after pill. I was once taking 12 prescriptions at once. Now I just take one occasionally.
Dr. Oz just bugs me, even though I watched only one part of one of his shows that my wife was watching. I guess I should have been giving him more credit
Hi Stephen. I think a lot of men feel that way about Dr. Oz, but women certainly take to him well. Hahaha. I could do without some of the dramatics on the show, including his dancing to get people to exercise, but I guess it’s the only way to get a big audience super-excited about healthy living.
BTW…congrats to you on getting rid of all those prescriptions. It’s amazing how well the body can heal itself when we give it the right tools.
I enjoy your blogs. They are informative and entertaining. They keep me very interested. Congratulations on such good work.
Dear Nea, I LOVED this, it made me laugh (stinky feet and vodka) and also intrigued me. As AVANTGAARD said you are both informative and entertaining. I would also add, deeply wise, kind and courageous. You ROCK, Nea. Sending you you a huge hug and loads of love. This was a joy to read.
Oh thanks so much Robin. It’s always so wonderful to see you here. I’m sending those hugs and loads of love right back your way. You’re the best!
Haaahaaaa Stinky feet to the liquor cabinet…LOL
That is awesome…. Drunken toes…Whatever works..
Now I have to convince my 17 year old son to wash his feet in vodka and not let him try and drink some….
Thanks for the advice and the chuckle…

I like the Pencil between the teeth trick to reduce tension.
it’s obvious the countries brainwashing is working when you see people take health advice from dr. oz.
