Inspirational Thoughts on Giving and Receiving

Are you a giver who keeps on giving, often neglecting yourself and rarely receiving anything in return? For your compassion and generosity I say thank you. For every person who has taken your generosity for granted, I say thank you. For every time you went unnoticed and unappreciated, thank you. For caring enough to give of yourself, for wanting to make the world a better place, for acting out of love and oneness with other beings—I say thank you. But there’s something else I want to say.

Everything in life is best when in balance. As you’re giving so much of yourself, remember that giving is at its best when the giver’s “cup” is full. Of course, in order to give and remain full, you must also receive. And in order to receive, you must sometimes ask.

Today’s inspirational thoughts encourage you to honor your need to receive, to embrace the cycle and allow the balance.

Being generous to everyone except yourself is not the path to fulfillment, happiness or a better world. It’s the path to destruction of your first priority in life. It doesn’t make you more loving, worthy or righteous. It just makes you a victim of yourself; and victims give up their power to change the world. Take your power back.

Every gift that can make this world a better place begins within. Inner peace must come before world peace. Inner joy before we live in a joy filled world. Herein lies the necessity for the cycle of giving and receiving.

To Keep Giving, Keep Receiving

Your generous heart longs to give, so start with the one person you were born to take care of above all else. That person is you. You ARE important. You are worthy of receiving, so give yourself permission to do just that.

Instead of wrestling with guilt when taking care of you means saying no to someone else, remember that you’re a better person for everyone when you are first good to you. Instead of trying to do everything alone, embrace the humility in asking for help.

With a smile on your face, do something special for yourself. With a willingness to move through any feelings of vulnerability, reach out to others for support. Allow yourself to experience life as both giver and receiver. Feel the balance.

Give yourself permission to prioritize your own physical, mental and emotional health. When you need to invest time, energy or money in you, do so without hesitation or regrets. To receive from yourself, you can take a class, go on a retreat, get a massage, enjoy a long bubble bath or take a day off. But don’t stop there. It’s just as important to receive from others. Have someone else run an errand for you, invest in your business, help out around the house or own parts of a project at work.

However you do it, just allow yourself to receive all that you deserve. And you do deserve it.

You deserve to be loved, respected and cared for. You deserve to have your cup running over with energy, love, knowledge, peace of mind. You deserve balance and a sense of connection to those who share this wonderful world with you.

Most importantly, you deserve an opportunity to say, “Thank you.”

Thank you.

When I picked up the cold, frail, lifeless kitten; she wasn’t moving. Her tongue was hanging out, she was unusually tiny, she had missing patches of hair, her eyes hadn’t yet opened and she was barely breathing.

I’d never seen anything so sad and helpless in my life. She was clearly in death’s grip, yet clinging to life nonetheless.

Not knowing how long her shallow breathing would continue, I decided to just hold her until she passed away. I wanted to make sure that, if nothing else, she would not spend the last few moments of her life alone. She could make her transition peacefully while comforted by me, a strange being of a totally different species.

Part of me hoped that the Universe would grant her the gift of a second chance, but I knew it wasn’t likely. I accepted that, but not without a barrage of mixed feelings. I didn’t want her to suffer even for a moment, yet I didn’t want her to die. I was happy to give her warmth and love, yet saddened by the overwhelming odds against her.

I put this precious little darling inside my sweater, her face barely peeking through the V-neck cut. I laid her on my heart, connecting her to my life source as I spoke softly both to her ears and her Soul.

Eventually, her tiny body felt warm to the touch. Shortly thereafter, I felt movement. She stirred just a bit and a surge of hope shot right through me. It was nearly palpable. Right then, I knew she had her second chance.

Believe it or not, I was never much of a cat person. But I am a life person. In fact, I’d say that is more true now than ever. Having this tiny kitten’s life in my hands was a strong reminder of just how precious (and temporary) our journey is on this Earth. Every moment could very well be the last moment, yet I’ve wasted so much time by not slowing down to be fully present in and appreciative of each experience. No more.

Within hours of the kitten showing signs of life, I put everything on hold to learn all that I could about raising a premature kitten by hand. After 18 years of raising my only child, I quite unexpectedly became a mom all over again. It looks a little different this time: Warming bottles of KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement), feeding every 2 hours (even at night), kitty CPR, stimulating urination and defecation by hand. Still, much of the experience is familiar: loving, nurturing, comforting and even worrying. I’ve named this little fighter Laila. Like the boxer Laila Ali, this kitten has exhibited amazing strength, determination and gusto.

She is not out of the danger zone and I don’t know what the future holds for her. What I do know is that she’s had 3 whole weeks on this Earth and she seems to be enjoying it. She’s walking, playing a bit and displaying a healthy appetite. What a miracle! She received the gift of life, but I feel as if I did too. I was clearly alive and well, but this experience allowed me to awaken even more. It seems that I was given the better gift—an opportunity to help save a life and to reflect deeply on my own.

Rescuing Laila has also reminded me of how important it is for us all to reach out to each other. There are too many people who, although they are alive, are dying inside. They are desperately in need of “life support,” yet most people are too busy to notice or care.

I deeply believe that we can make a difference by giving of ourselves when others—even strangers—need a hug, a shoulder to lean on, an encouraging word or an ounce of compassion.

No one person can save the world, but we can all help to save a life—even if it’s just for the moment.

Inspirational Thoughts

If life has brought you a challenge and you’re feeling a bit distressed, today’s inspirational thoughts are for you.

As you move forward with your week, remember that where you are is always the perfect place from which to springboard into a better reality. And you have everything that you need to do just that.

You have the ability to learn, grow and make life-changing decisions. More importantly, you have the freedom to direct your thoughts and, therefore, your feelings to change your reality for the better.

Right now, in this moment you can decide to procrastinate, feel sorry for yourself, give up or give in. On the other hand, you can make this moment the most amazing turning point of your life. You can rewrite your story to include what happens when tools like self-confidence, a positive attitude and determination are put to good use.

You may feel frustrated, angry or defeated today; but it’s still a perfect jumping off place for something better. If you want to be happy—to feel happiness—it is yours.

Even if something you deeply desire seems completely out of reach or you’ve just experienced a grave disappointment, the story doesn’t have to end there. As long as there is air in your lungs, don’t give up. Keep crafting the story.

From this place that you stand right now, you can choose to springboard into something absolutely magical. Or you can choose to just stand there shivering and complaining.

If you choose the former, you can accomplish your goals, follow your dreams and realize your heart’s desires. You can experience the happiness, love and boundless joy that is overdue for you.

Will you join me in making the shift?

Think for a second about the difficulty you are facing right now and slowly turn your thoughts to the new story you want to tell. What will you do differently? How will you shift your thoughts, actions, reactions? 3 months, 3 years, 30 years from now, does the story say that you sat helplessly in a puddle of tears or that you tapped into the limitless possibilities of you? The decision is yours.

The current challenge in your life is without doubt not your first and it won’t be your last. Fortunately, however, they all have something in common. They are your springboards. Instead of freezing in a state of fearful desperation, see every challenges as the perfect jumping off place that they is at every single moment of your life.

“You don’t drown by falling in the water; you drown by staying there.”

The freedom to live with both the motivating excitement of a new beginning and the enthusiastic anticipation of completion. Not the power to become—but to simply be. Not the power to remember—but to create anew. That is the power of now.

Yesterday and tomorrow—beyond the extent to which they motivate and inspire you today—are irrelevant. This day, this hour, this moment is all that truly matters. Yesterday is no longer, and tomorrow does not exist. The now is all there is, all you need, all that’s real. Embrace it, enjoy it and make magic in it.

The more you choose to honor the amazing power of now, the more you allow the peace of mind, happiness and well-being that are your destiny. They are always here, waiting for you to turn your attention away from the meaningless illusions that threaten to separate you from your joy. Can you feel it?

This moment—the now—is yours. Check in with yourself to make sure that you’re here. Are you truly present in the now? Not just physically present with your feet planted firmly on the ground beneath you. Are you deeply, completely, wholeheartedly present?

Such a presence has the power to raise your vibration so that you are allowing your full connection to the Source of everything beautiful, right and marvelous in this world.

There’s so much to love and appreciate about today—about your now. Join me in tapping in to it.

Take a moment to center your thoughts on the possibilities available to you in this moment. Find something in your mind’s eye that’s worthy of a smile, a laugh, a sigh of relief, an attitude of gratitude.

If you’re blocked, breathe in deeply and notice the way your breath travels perfectly through your body, keeping you alive and giving you another opportunity to appreciate your life. Now place your hand gently on your chest, noticing the soft thump of your heart against your fingertips as the blood circulates through the miracle of you.

You, my friend, are a masterpiece. Nothing that has ever happened or that ever might happen is more important than this fact. Right here, right now is everything.

With every breath, let your past regrets and future worries slip away. With every heartbeat, guide your thoughts to the deep, empowering truths that serve you. Love this moment. Love who you are in this moment.

There is no way to know how many heartbeats or breaths of fresh air you have left; but what you can know is how you will use them. This choice is your power. It is the power that you, in all your awesomeness, evoke to create your reality. It is the power of now.

What will you do with it?

It’s comment time. Did you enjoy this week’s inspirational thoughts? Are you able to be fully present, embracing your now?

On this beautiful Monday, I feel compelled to remind you that, no matter where you are on your journey right now, all is well.

You have the support of the entire Universe; therefore, wherever you are, there is boundless opportunity for joy. All that you have or don’t have, all that you know or don’t know, all that you are—is absolutely enough. Enough to make magic and to create the life of your dreams.

I offer this perspective in hopes that you will take it as your own, trusting that this powerful belief is the precursor to manifesting the “stuff” your dreams are made of.

I don’t know exactly what you desire or what would bring you joy; but I do know that joy is your birthright. I know that you need only to tap into it, to release any resistance, to allow the manifestation of it, to go with the flow of it.

Life, I believe, is like a stream—flowing perfectly, confidently, serenely and always in the right direction. Flowing unconditional love, happiness, light, peace of mind.

As a living, breathing reflection of the Source that lives within you; you can never stray away from this stream. That is the miracle here. Your best life is never out of reach.

Now, I must say that I, of all people, know how untrue this can feel. When times are tough, life feels more like falling off a cliff than flowing effortlessly in a stream. But I want to share with you a perspective that has helped me to change my life.

No matter how far you feel that you are from your “happy place” or how much you believe you have strayed from your path, you remain one with the stream. No action, inaction, choice or mistake can ever change that. All you ever need to do is figure out how to go with the flow.

Should you find yourself feeling separate from the stream, realize that this is an illusion. Thoughts and beliefs that don’t serve you can resist the stream, which feels very much like separateness. But there is no true separation. You are in the stream and the stream is in you.

By “swimming” against it’s current, you may cause yourself unnecessary pain. Yet, that pain is only a message. It is a message from your Higher Self that calls you back downstream, summoning you to go with the flow. Every emotion lower than joy is a reminder of this message.

To honor the message and to flow with the stream, let go of what holds you back. Let go of what fear wants you to do. Turn away from what resentment, scarcity, doubt and anxiety want you to do. These are all forms of resistance…and you know what happens when you resist (or work against) a current.

The stream of life is there for you and it can perfectly support you in living your best life. Why not allow it to do so?

If you’re holding on to some stick in the mud while the stream is flowing you forward, just let go. Go with the flow. If you’re thrashing about and swimming with all your might, just let go. Go with the flow.

In the flow, miracles happen. Love, success and accomplishments happen. Relationships evolve. Success takes on new meaning. Joy becomes the “way” rather than the occasional outcome. Storms pass you by. Rainbows seem more vibrant. The sun shines on you even when the whole world seems cloudy. Hearts heal. Minds relax. Lives change forever.

Will you go with the flow?

Living an Extraordinary Life?

If you sometimes find yourself feeling that your life is a little too ordinary, challenge yourself to see through the eyes of someone who would bubble over with joy if they could trade places with you.

Somewhere out there is someone who doesn’t complain about getting out of bed because he didn’t have a safe or comfortable place to sleep in the first place. You may have to cook for your family when you come in tired from work, but what would that look like to someone who can’t remember her last hot meal? What about for someone who dreams of having a family or someone whose disability doesn’t even allow him to eat unassisted?

While you’re arguing over nonsense with your spouse, a widower wishes he had taken more time to cherish the wife he’ll never see again. The same is true of every barren woman who has tried unsuccessfully for years to conceive a child like the one who wakes you from your sleep at night.

In many places all over the world, children are forced to drop out of school because they must work to support the family or they can’t afford something as simple as the pencils that you and I take for granted.

Reevaluating Your Ordinary Life

No matter how ordinary or unfulfilled your life may seem, there are people all over this world who would find great satisfaction and joy in being you. To walk a mile in their shoes would definitely shift your perspective, but is such a drastic measure really necessary? Of course not. Clean your lenses today and watch the extraordinary begin to shine.

Instead of looking at what you “have to” do, reframe everything in terms of what you “get to” do. This may seem like a tiny shift in words, but it’s so much more than that. Looking at what you get to do means taking an empowering perspective that allows gratitude to lead the way. You can apply this and reap great benefits in every aspect of your life.

Finding the Extraordinary in Your Ordinary Life

Rather than being frustrated when you “have to” walk a long way after someone takes your perfect parking space, give thanks for your legs with every step that you take. They’ve been there all of your life, but they didn’t have to be and there is no promise that they will be tomorrow. In this moment, you “get to” walk because of them. That’s extraordinary to someone. Why not you?

Instead of begrudgingly paying bills while thinking, “I ‘have to’ pay my mortgage (or rent, car note, utilities, etc..) again”, give thanks for the opportunity. A place to live, running water, air conditioning, heat, visits to the doctor, work and school, transportation…these are all luxuries. In fact, they are luxuries that much of the world cannot afford. A pair of shoes, food to cook, a warm bed, hearing, sight, a nagging spouse, noisy kids…these are also luxuries that make your life extraordinary in someone’s eyes. Why not yours?

Each time you use one of your luxuries or you spend money to pay for them, look beyond what you “have to” do. There is a gift there that someone else sees in a way you may have lost sight of. Gently remind yourself that in each “have to” is a “get to” worth embracing and appreciating. From this perspective, it’s easy to see that the only thing ordinary about your life is the way you look at it.

With an attitude of gratitude, tap into the greater reality of your life. Don’t wait until you’ve lost someone or something special to realize what’s so phenomenally extraordinary about it all.

Are You Tapped In, Tuned In, Turned On to Joy?

Joy is a choice…a daily, hourly, momentary choice. In any situation, we may choose to react in whatever way we please.

If you are blessed with the gift of life again tomorrow, you will once more face opportunities to choose your way back to joy. Sometimes, the choice is easy. A hummingbird takes flight right before your eyes, the sun shines perfectly on your garden, your mate’s happy mood brightens your day. There is no difficulty in choosing joy in such moments. But variety is the spice of life.

When Joy is Missing in Your Life

What choice do you make on a dreary day, when the flowers wilt and the clouds hover in shades of gray? When the one you love speaks a harsh word, your body aches and the work you once loved seems but a bore? When there’s much to do and little time to do it, mistakes slow your progress, crisis holds you down, and you feel all alone in the wilderness of life?

These are the times when it’s easy to forget that joy is a choice. Joy is not just something that happens when circumstances are great—unless of course that’s the only time you allow yourself to receive the joy that is here for you. YOUR Joy cannot be limited by the people, events and circumstances in your life.

You are the sole individual capable of placing shackles on the feet of your joy. Fortunately, you are also the one who holds the key to those shackles.

Getting Back to Joy

Life doesn’t need to always go as you plan it in order for you to experience joy. In fact, joy couldn’t be experienced at all if the possibility of its opposite didn’t exist. So, how do you find your way back to joy? How do you move through the darkness?

First and foremost, acknowledge your pain, frustration, fear, discomfort. Don’t try to drown it out or resist it. Just acknowledge it without giving yourself over to it. Know that whatever feelings you have are valid. It is your right and choice to feel them, so allow yourself to do so. Bitterness, contempt, loneliness, guilt, despair. Identify exactly what you’re feeling, refusing to cover it up with outbursts, negative behaviors or mind-altering substances. Know that you can survive whatever feelings come up.

Notice the experiences, the sensations, and the perspectives that lead to the way you feel in the moment. Now, notice how these feelings are serving you. Do they help you in anyway? Do these feelings, or the thoughts that give them life, move you closer to joy? You are of course entitled to your feelings, but do you really want to hold on to them? Do they empower or dis-empower? Motivate or demotivate?

From this space of awareness, you may choose the direction of your choice. You may choose responsibility and empowerment over blame and worry. You may release criticism of yourself , other people and whatever situations arise. Without the attachment of judgment, just notice it all. And when you’re ready, ponder a different perspective.

How can you look at the present moment differently, more compassionately? How might you soften your thoughts? Will you replace anger with compassion, fear with acceptance of what-is? This is the path back to joy.

Are You Ready for Joy?

There’s no better time than now to begin applying this life lesson. During the course of your day, some person or institution may wrong you. You’ll have every right to feel sorrowful, angry, unforgiving or vengeful; but you also have the right to choose a renewed perspective, and thereby an emotion and mental attitude, that better serves you.

The path to joy is always here, even when you veer off course. And the choice to get back on track is always yours. You CAN choose joy. Will you?

While we often discuss the importance of letting go of the past, today’s inspirational thoughts inspire you to embrace the residual gifts that the past leaves behind.

The past is gone, but it never vanishes without a trace. These traces are with us all in the present moment. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The determining factor is always the individual lenses through which you see your Now.

The residue of the past is nothing less than a present. Though you are absolutely free to do with it as you please, it is there for your benefit.

With both your physical and spiritual eyes, take a close look at the amazing person staring back at you in the mirror today. See all that is good and right, beautiful and strong, experienced and wise. See the evolution of a person who has lived—a person who has a past from which to learn, grow and move forward.

As you greet your new and improved self each morning, give thanks for the layers you’ve shed in the past. Give thanks that you are not the person you were yesterday, the day before, the year or decade before; but also give thanks for the origin of you.

You are someone who has been up and down, lost and found, free and trapped. You’ve been challenged, hurt, kicked down and shut out. All of this is what makes the story beautiful; because you are also someone who is still standing, growing, developing and blossoming.

You are stronger because the past required you to use your strength. You are wiser because, in the past, you stayed the course when you didn’t know. You’re more powerful because the past moved you to tap into your power.

You, my friend, are why it’s all worth it. You are, in essence, a living and breathing manifestation of what comes next. The rainbow that couldn’t be experienced without the rain.

Day in and day out, through both your achievements and your mistakes, you contribute to the expansion of this great Universe. You touch lives all around you, triggering new ideas and perspectives in others, most often without your knowing.

You are a spiritual being with more to offer than your physical eyes, hands and mind can understand. While you may never completely comprehend the magnitude of your value in the bigger picture, I encourage you to trust in the process of life. Look around; realizing that the physicality of our world is one tiny part of the puzzle. Trust that you are more than this. Trust that not a single solitary moment of your life is ever (or has ever been) wasted.

It is my belief, that Source (or God, Holy Spirit, Divine Existence) always sees us this way. But how do we see ourselves? How do you see yourself? Do you know that everything you do, and everything you’ve ever done, is of value to All-That-Is?

Because of your past, you ARE. And all is well.

“All your past except its beauty is gone and nothing is left but a blessing”

“It’s choice–not chance–that determines your destiny.” Jean Nidetch

What could be more inspiring than knowing for sure that YOU WILL live your destiny? Perhaps very few things, aside from knowing that you also CHOOSE that destiny.

You are not a slave to some static, predetermined outcome that’s completely out of your control. That is, unless you think you are. Other than your core destiny, which is simply to be, you are without limitation.

You can be happy or sad, aware or naive, dreadful or zestful, rich or poor. Your destiny is multidimensional, flexible, dynamic, and—most importantly—determined solely by you.

If you ever question the significance of your being, simply remember that your thoughts are among the most powerful magnetic forces in the Universe. Because of you—a magnet to whatever you choose to believe— so very much is possible. What might you attract with that magnetism today? Tomorrow? Throughout your life? Will it be joy, peace, knowledge, prosperity? What about kind people, fun experiences, deep love, amazing opportunities? You need only to put it out if you want to receive it.

If you stand for kindness, offer a kind attitude even to those who aren’t so kind to you. If it is prosperity that’s of importance to you, exhibit mental prosperity and share as generously as you can with others. No kind thought or generous action is in vain. Reciprocation IS your destiny. What will be reciprocated to you?

Everyday is one ripe with opportunities to choose your destiny by living your destiny. Will you face the world with a positive disposition, drawing nearer and nearer the best life experiences possible? Will you find something to be thankful for even on the darkest days, thereby brightening the world with your very own internal sunshine?

It is my wish for you that, if nothing else, you realize your own empowerment over your life. May you never forget that you were born 100% equipped with the tools you need to choose the destiny you desire.

Remember…It is that which you desire, not the lack of it, that deserves the power of your focused thoughts and beliefs. I hope that today’s inspirational thoughts have further inspired you to choose, attract, create and allow what is rightfully yours: Your destiny.

We all know that it’s pleasing to others when we express appreciation. But the benefits of an attitude of gratitude neither begin nor end there. Did you know that feeling gratitude for others is one of the best ways to make yourself feel better? That may seem a bit odd to some, but I invite you to join me in putting this little theory to the test. If you’re up for the challenge, join me in this powerful little gratitude and appreciation exercise for the next 7 days.

Each day this week, take a few moments away to do nothing but think of someone to appreciate. Just one person who added something of value to your life.

There are no limits here. The person you feel appreciation for doesn’t need to be someone you interact with today. It doesn’t need to be someone who saved your life or did something else remarkably unforgettable. It can be someone who has earned your appreciation directly or indirectly, drastically or modestly, knowingly or unknowingly.

The person you feel gratitude for may be a family member, friend or teacher. It may be a service person, someone who is no longer alive, or even someone you’ve never met.

The important thing with this gratitude and appreciation exercise is to spend time appreciating the positive ways in which the contributions of others have touched your life.

If, for some reason, you have trouble with this, think of something (instead of someone) that you appreciate. Once you have that something in mind, think of a person who is connected to that something. For example, if you feel gratitude for the beautiful blue sky, maybe you can appreciate the people who educate others on clean energy and love for the environment. Think of the time, energy or dedication that they put forth. Hold them in your thoughts for several months with a powerfully, positive focus.

Notice how easy it is to feel good when you’re focused on appreciation. The more time you spend on this exercise, the better you’ll feel. As you allow yourself to think of people to thank, you’ll slowly realize just how much you have to be thankful for. Allow this attitude of gratitude to fully consume you as you consume the positive vibration that flows forth from it.

Be inspired, motivated and energized from a place deep within you. This place is one that you can always turn to you when you’re feeling down and out. It’s a place where you can pick yourself up by merely feeling the benefits of your connection with everything and everyone around you.

I wish you a wonderful week, but before I go I’d like to share a brief excerpt from my own gratitude list.

I feel immense gratitude and appreciation for:

The people who work in all weather conditions building streets and highways that allow me thousands of smooth rides back and forth from one destination to another

Every person who gives an animal a safe, happy home

The librarian who always helps me find what I’m looking for

The awesome nerdy-types who develop new technologies that spoil me rotten

My precious daughter who challenges and motivates me, but never lets me forget that sometimes you just need to take a “chill pill”

The seamstress who made my favorite blanket
Minnie Mouse, who always makes me smile when I see her big ears and cheery face

The landscapers who beautifully manicure lawns, plant flowers, and install irrigation systems that give me beautiful scenery to observe in our neighborhood

My super friendly mailman and all the other postal service workers (and FedEx/UPS people) who help to add the major convenience of mail and package deliveries to my life.

Esther Hicks – for bringing the teachings of Abraham and the Universal Law of Attraction into my life.

The amazing readers of this blog whose comments, ideas and loving support inspire me to continue doing what I love and living my best life.

I hope this week’s inspirational thoughts have touched your life in a way that you will pass on to those around you. As always, I thank you and I appreciate you. I wish you an infinity filled with more love and gratitude than you could ever hope for.
